REPURPOSE VS RECYCLE

What's the difference between "upcycle" and "recycle"?  And when is it "recycle" vs "repurpose?"  These are very thought provoking questions ... ok, not really.

I've had this pillow for many years.  I did not do the stitching on it. I did buy it in Scotland - when we lived there (1991 - 1994).

It has lived a good long life - getting sat on, slept on, even puked on ... sorry for over-sharing.

The pillow inside still had some life left in it and there was a perfectly nice zipper on the back.  SEW...

Lucky me ... I actually FOUND this appliqued block while tidying up (and you KNOW I don't do that often).  It was made for a Pat Sloan swap last year.  Then I found out my swap partner wanted pink (not red).  Not sure why I never did anything with it.  But now ... it's a pillow!

With a perfectly nice zipper on the back.

The zipper on the back is very important.  I'm giving this pillow to Daughter #1 for Valentine's Day.  She has 4 children under the age of 10 and a dog ... this pillow cover WILL need to be washed - often.

I think I recycled not repurposed the zipper ... it was a zipper and it still is a zipper.

What a beautiful pillow and a wonderful gift.
I have seen a lot of old linens in the thrift and wonder why people just throw out things that they put so much work into. I have a few old things I made and need to decide what to do with them.

Too bad you can't edit your comments -- I misspelled something and had to start from scratch. What I said was that if you don't already have a use for that lovely embroidered top to the old pillow, I'll take it. I am always inspired by your perspective on things. Now if only I knew how to make decent curtains....

Very nicely done! your daughter will love it. I always made my stuff washable too! :)
I recently saw a tute or picture or something where someone used a flap of fabric to cover the zip in a contrasting fab. Made a nice designer looking back as well.

Way to go!!! I love the new pillow cover...what a great gift for your daughter! You are going to keep the linen stitchery aren't you? Perhaps a small patch with some stitchery or pretty little applique' to cover the mending and frame it or display it in some way. It's very beautiful. Hugs...

Yes, that is a beautiful pillow. I was your Valentine swap partner in Pat Sloan's Valentine swap, and I would have loved the red one too. Everything you make looks wonderful, Mary.

Repurpose is probably a better word than "Cannibalized" which is what I went with when I hacked into an embellished crazy quilt square and made a hex shaped needle book instead :)
Love your bag!
